Our hearts are breaking at the news that TobyMac’s oldest son, 21-year-old Truett Foster McKeehan, has died.
“Truett did pass away at home in the Nashville area,” a representative for TobyMac confirmed in an initial statement released to USA Today. “Cause of death has not been determined. Toby was traveling back from Canada and did not get home to be with his family until after midnight last night so there is no statement. We just ask that everyone please be respectful of their privacy during this time and allow them to grieve their loss.”
Nashville police report that Truett was found unresponsive late Wednesday morning. Emergency crews were dispatched to a call for cardiac arrest. Police add that there is no evidence of foul play or suicide. An autopsy will be conducted at the Davidson County Medical Examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.
Truett Foster McKeehan was an aspiring independent rapper who released content online as Truett Foster, truDog, TRU and Shiloh. Truett had collaborated with his GRAMMY award-winning father on a few occasions including in this 2010 track “Loud’N’Clear” from TobyMac’s Tonight record.
Truett’s most recent Instagram post on October 19th, following his first live show, has become a sort of online memorial with fans posting thoughts and prayers on a video post that Truett captioned “last night it all kinda came together… thank you to everyone who has supported me through the thick and thin.” We do caution you of the explicit language used in the Instagram post by the individual introducing Truett to the stage.
TobyMac’s hit song “Scars” released last year was dedicated to Truett. In an interview with Digital Journal at the time, TobyMac shared, “‘Scars’ is deeply personal and for me, it is about my son. He is 20 years old and he left home and he is doing his own thing now. It’s also about watching him go through tough times and get cut and bruised. Watching people you love go through hard things is tough, and I want people to know that they are not alone.”
TobyMac has canceled the remainder of his planned Canadian tour dates per CTV reporting.
Please join us in offering our sincerest condolences and prayers for Truett and all of his friends and family.
