DOE (Dominique Jones) first gained worldwide attention as a teenager as the lead singer of the group Forever Jones, which released three albums and garnered numerous accolades, including two GRAMMY Award nominations. Now as a solo artist, she offers a refreshing sound with uplifting and introspective messages that people are in need of more than ever. In this TCB Exclusive, DOE talks about her self titled EP, which is available today via Life Room / RCA Inspiration.

Congrats on the upcoming release of your self titled EP! How long was this collection in the making?
Thank you. Quite honestly it only took us about 3 months to really nail the songs down and then record. It was still a lot of hard work though.

How does your connection to the music you write and record help engage listeners?
Well, I believe my grandmother said it best. It has to bless you before it can bless other people. My music has really come from my heart. It’s very honest. These are things I’m learning in my own life.

Success can mean many things to different people. Have you thought about what success looks like for DOE?
Success means leaving this world empty of everything you came here with and being able to say you handled it with care.

How would you describe your sound on this EP?
Hmmm… Neo Soul Gospel life music.

Doe

As a songwriter, do you often find either the melody or the lyrics come to you first?
Well, being that I usually write on an instrument, sometimes they both come together.

Who are some of your current musical or lyrical influences?
John Mayor. PJ Morton.

What is one key message or takeaway you would want to share with others that are working to put together what their music looks and sounds like?
Own your journey, and share your journey. It’s the only way to add dollar signs to everything you’ve been through. Be one-hundred percent you, but also don’t be afraid to incorporate other perspectives.

With 2020 coming to a close, can you share with us something you are looking forward to in the remaining months or even into 2021?
A new year. I think we can all say we’re looking forward to a new year. And we’re all going to just continue moving forward because the best is still yet to come
