Samuel Jacob Lopez Jr., better known as COQUÍ, has been releasing music since 2022 with hits like “Ven Con Migo” and “My Lord Provided” when he caught the attention of Lance Brown at DREAM Records.  After signing a new deal with DREAM, COQUÍ is set to debut his newest offering titled “Today” on May 3rd.

Sam, it’s nice to meet you.  Tell me about how you got started in music:
Yeah, so when I was about 9 or 10 years old, my dad (who was a DJ) taught me how to beat match records on his vinyl turntables. I picked it up pretty quickly so every weekend we would practice in the living room while my mom cooked breakfast. Around that same time, I had stayed with my uncle Rob, who lived in Burbank, for a few weeks in the summer. He was a professional percussionist in the Latin music industry and took me around Los Angeles to all his rehearsals and gigs. It was pretty clear after that I wanted to be a musician. A few years later, I discovered punk rock music from some older skater kids I had met at church youth group, and one of them showed me how to play Blink182 on the guitar. From that moment on, I was pretty much hooked.

How does your faith in Jesus play a role in your music?
I’d say my faith in Jesus influences every aspect of my life. I aim to lead by example, shining a light in the darkness through my actions. In each song I write, I pull together ideas, theology, imagery, and metaphors that I hope will spark conversations about faith and the truth.

Many new artists are influencing others on social media.  You look to be really building something special with your audience on Instagram and TikTok.  How did you get started building your audience on those platforms?
Honestly, I still don’t even know what I’m doing. Feels like the algorithms change every other day. I guess my one strategy has been to always make sure whatever I post gives value to whoever discovers it. I try not to post things just to post. Quality over quantity.  And I try to be as honest and real as possible. I’m grateful for the audience I’ve built along the way and I pay attention to every repost and comment. I want to make sure everyone who follows me feels heard. Without them, I wouldn’t have a career.

You’re about to release your first track with DREAM Records called “Today.”  What is the message you’d like to convey to your audience with this song?
This song is all about finding your way out of worry and darkness by leaning on faith and patience. Not to hurry through life, but to believe that everything will work out when it’s meant to. It’s about the journey of feeling trapped and held down by stress and anxiety to finally feeling joyful and eager to face what comes next, all by letting go and trusting in something bigger than ourselves to lead the way.

It says in your biography that you’re influenced by a lot of musical styles.  How do you feel that plays a role in writing your songs?
I think it helps me not get stuck in one box. I’m able to recognize a great song, regardless of its genre, and be able to take inspiration from it. A lot of my songs start with whatever mood I’m in at the moment. So if it’s a cold rainy day, I might write something dark and dreamy.., and if it’s a bright sunny day I might write something more dancy and upbeat. It all just depends on the day. You definitely won’t find me writing any reggaeton or ukulele music though, haha.

Lastly, what’s next for COQUÍ  after “Today?”
Lots more music, a few collabs in the works, more live shows and hopefully a tour in the summer… All in God’s timing.
