Sarah Reeves helps ring in the Christmas music season with her new 8-song EP More The Merrier out November 12th. Preceded by covers of classic Christmas songs “Go Tell It On The Mountain” and “Winter Wonderland (feat. Clark Beckham)”, the album is a mixture of original tracks and fresh takes on classics like “Holly Jolly Christmas”.
The holiday EP begins with the title track “More the Merrier”, and it instantly captured my attention. The song starts with a short musical interlude reminiscent of Christmas feelings of warmth and happiness one seeks to find every year. As the song journeys on, the feelings only grow stronger. Lyrically, the song conveys letting go of troubles, grabbing hold of joy, and anticipating the beauty Christmastime offers. Beyond the incredible musicianship and impeccable lyric choices, Sarah’s voice over the jazz groove takes the song even higher, proving her versatility as a singer.
On “Snow Globe”, Sarah pushes the envelope, but in a refreshing way. Speaking to her significant other, she makes the wish for the memories of their love during Christmastime to be captured and placed in a snow globe. Passionate yet delicate, the track is specifically enjoyable for any person in love. I honor her for highlighting the beauty of love, something God created and encouraged among His children since Adam and Eve.
Now, there is a bit of distaste for the opening musical interlude for “My Favorite Things”. It is reminiscent of an animated movie score where the character is falling to its demise. However, after the song garners a sense of normalcy and pleasantry, it leaves me wanting more by the end. I also applaud the small runs and rifts she does mid-song. They’re so quick you might miss them, yet there are so beautiful and effortless.
Known predominantly for her Christian music, I was anticipating more Christian themes to be honest. Though “The Greatest Gift” offers some subtle undertones, and of course, “Go Tell It On The Mountain” blatantly shouts Jesus’ name, I would consider it a bit more secular. However, listening to it made me excited for Christmastime activities like spending time with family and putting up the Christmas tree. Sarah Reeves’ More Than Merrier is the perfect album to play in the background as you make new Christmas memories. It will be part of my annual Christmas music playlist for years to come, and I highly suggest making it part of yours as well. It’s a classic, and I do not use those words lightly.
