Hillary Scott & The Scott Family Love Remains Album Review
My Rating 4/5

Love Remains is the first faith-based album from the talented Scott family. The album offers plenty to believe in. These are songs that find the redemption in struggle, the peace in death and the joy in bonding with family members whenever times are tough. Hillary Scott shared,“with all that we’ve gone through, we have been able to process everything together while solidifying the strong foundation that we have in our family.” The vocals of the Scott family often contribute beautiful harmonies to each of the songs, further emphasizing the strength and beauty found in family.

loveremainsblockThe opening song on the album, “Beautiful Messes,” speaks of the beauty and hope that can come from our messy brokenness when we surrender it all to God. The lyrics say, “when you’re looking in the mirror / do you see someone impossible to love / full of broken, fragile pieces / we’re all loved around the edges.” When we lay down this brokenness, God still sees us as beautiful. The cheerful mandolin and acoustic guitar create a folksy vibe that makes the song immediately catchy.

“The River” beautifully conveys the message of the cleansing and redemptive blood of Jesus. The piano, electric guitar, and organ instruments give the song a powerful gospel feel, especially in the chorus, as the lyrics invite listeners to “come down to the river / and be washed in His blood / let your sin be forgiven / by the power of His love.” The chorus of voices singing harmonies makes the song sound full and powerful.

“Ain’t No Grave” feels like a good old campfire song with a fresh, raw sound. Acoustic guitar, impressive harmonies, banjo, and a foot-stompin rhythm set this song apart from the rest of the album because of its feel. You can almost picture the s’mores roasting over the campfire as voices and instruments celebrate the truth that we have been set free from the grave. A few bars into the song you’ll find yourself singing along with the Scott family.

Love Remains was born from a painful place of loss, but the end result focuses more on the celebration of life – specifically the life we’ve been given in Christ. The sound of the album ranges from pop to bluegrass, and the lyrics speak powerfully about love and life. The Scott family’s talent is sure to impress in Love Remains.
