Hitmakers 7eventh Time Down return March 1 with Brand New Day, the band’s highly anticipated fourth BEC studio recording. Featuring 10 tracks, six of which were produced by 7eventh Time Down frontman Mikey Howard, the project also showcases production contributions from GRAMMY Award-winner Theron “Neff-U” Feemster (Michael Jackson, Mary J. Blige), Ian Eskelin (Francesca Battistelli, Sidewalk Prophets) and Colby Wedgeworth (Tauren Wells, Zach Williams). The band’s bassist Cliff Williams recently took a few minutes to talk with us about the message behind Brand New Day, which is now available for pre-order.
Congratulations on the upcoming release of Brand New Day! How is the group feeling about release day being less than a week away?
It’s equal parts of excitement and anxiousness. We’ve been living with these songs for a while and are pumped about them. We’re also very excited to see what 7TD fans—old and new—think about the music.
It's been almost 4 years since the band's last record release, how long was this project in the making?
The cool thing about this project was that we didn’t have a deadline. We started working on tunes in the fall of 2017, during the Big Church Night Out Tour. It’s been a long time but it felt short to us, and that’s probably because we are so in love with the results.
How do you think this album has evolved compared to your previous three releases?
Our guitar player left the band in early 2018, and he was a big part of what defined our sound for nearly 15 years. On top of that, we’ve lived a lot of life in four years. Kids have been born, loved ones have been lost. All of that has shaped us into the band we are now, and these songs reflect our experiences in those four years.
What were some of your biggest inspirations (spiritual or musical) in developing this collection of songs?
Our wives and kids are the heart and soul of these songs. Basically, if the track made my kids dance and sing, I knew we were onto something. Musically, we were inspired by some really great creators: Imagine Dragons, Michael Jackson, and of course most prominently, dcTalk.
Which track are you most excited for listeners to hear and why?
This is hard. I would say “The 99” because of how important the message is. It reminds everyone that no matter how unwanted you might feel by one group or another, there’s a God who loves you and wants you more than anything else in the world. But as a close second, I’d say “Brand New Day.” This song has so much attitude that I get pumped every time I hear it!
What is one key message that you hope listeners take away from this album as a whole?
No matter where you are in life, God knows all the gory and ugly details of your story and still He pursues you. He loves you. He has a plan for you. He’s patient and faithful. There are more people just like you walking through this crazy life, but God is big enough and has enough love for all of us.
With such an exciting start to 2019, what else does 7eventh Time Down have planned for the remainder of 2019?
We have a spring tour with an exciting lineup, and we plan on being in full swing this summer too. Getting back on the road is a priority for us. We are excited to bring these new songs we have come to love to the people who made them possible.
