Christian recording artist, author, speaker and influencer Maddie Rey recently released an expanded edition of her fan-favorite book, DWELL: Empowering The Next Generation To Live The Life God Intended, available now exclusively on Amazon. The revised version, that include new chapters, builds on Rey’s personal mission to empower Christian youth and inspire the upcoming generation to hold fast to their faith. Also, the 23-year-old vocalist recently debuted her holiday track, a unique cover to the classic “This Christmas,” with an accompanying music video. In this TCB Exclusive, Rey opens up about what inspired the expanded edition of her book and the unifying purpose that drives all her projects.
Congratulations on the upcoming release of the expanded edition of DWELL: Empowering The Next Generation To Live The Life God Intended! Can you share a bit about how this opportunity came about and your goal for this edition?
Well, this book “Dwell” is my life, my testimony, and my heart within a book. I released it several years ago, but with re-releasing it as a revised and expanded edition, my hope is really to introduce to the book an audience that has never read it before. I also want to continue to add value to those who have already read it with the additional chapter that is now included. I am so excited for it to get into the hands of many people. I even share in it the heart I really have for Pastor’s Kids and church kids, I think they’ll really connect with it. There are so many practical tools and steps in there for anyone in general – from the youngest to the oldest – no matter what walk of life you come from. My hope is for people to be able to find the answer to the question “What is this life that God intended for me to live?” Throughout the book I share several stories of my life, and of what God has done in me in hopes that it will be an example to others of what they can do as well.
Is there a passage from the original edition that you think the world most needs to hear now, that perhaps has a bit different meaning than when originally released?
Today when we look at where the church is at, the message of choosing to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of your life becomes more relevant – especially in today’s young generation. You hear a lot of people saying that they are deconstructing their faith, falling away from their faith, or leaving the church. This is concerning as it pertains to the next generation of Christians. That is why this message is needed today. We need to encourage young people to dwell, and to get back into church! I try to do exactly that through this book to encourage and empower a generation.
In addition to DWELL, you also recently released an original music track (“Deserve Your Love”). What part of the creative process most surprised you?
There are two parts to the creative process of releasing this song and music video that I most enjoyed. One was being able to work with hit song writer Makeba Riddick Woods. It was incredible to work with an established songwriter like Makeba, and also to hear the lyrics coming through her as we created this song! ‘Deserve Your Love’ is all about those times in your life where you feel undeserving or unworthy. It is about the times when you are crying out to God, when you don’t know what choice to make, or where to go. It’s an incredible reminder of the love of God – that no matter where we are at or how we feel the Lord is there for us and He loves us. The second most surprising, or maybe most exciting part of this release is the fact that we were able to record this music video in an incredible mansion that looks almost like a castle – it was beautiful! I loved it, and it was such an amazing experience. The most beautiful part of this was that when you look at the mansion, and you see the greatness of the home, it is also a reminder of the greatness and grandness of our God. No matter what we go through, our God is greater, grander, and better. He is just incredible! The home we recorded in reminded me of how great and grand our God is, and also just how involved He is in our lives!
When preparing for your different creative opportunities (music, author, etc.), in what ways do you approach them differently and similarly?
I am grateful for how this year has helped me bring all the different things I do, between music, evangelism, preaching, and writing, bringing all of that together and merging it into one ministry – Maddie Rey Ministries. It has been really neat to see how that has come together. I think people can see it as doing a “lot of different things in a lot of different lanes”, but to me these are just the vehicles God has given me to really share the gospel of Jesus Christ and to help young people live the life God has created for them to live! When I approach my music, books or preaching a lot of it intertwines with one another! When I released songs this year I often and intentionally paired a book with them! For example – I released a song called ‘No Bad Days,’ and then released a book called ‘No Bad Days’ that shared how life is good because God is good! I then released a song called ‘Never Let You Go’ and also released a children’s book called ‘Never Let You Go’ that encourages children to keep their faith and never let go of their faith in Jesus Christ. I also released another song called ‘No More Lies,’ and wrote a book to go along with it called ‘No More Lies’ that focuses on how you can find your identity and purpose in Christ! Everything is intertwined – within my music, sermons, and books. The goal in this is to help people live out the life God had for them. Whether that is finding their identity and purpose, walking in purity, holiness, and righteousness, or just being confident in who God created you to be – I approach everything that I do with that same message of how when you accept Jesus into your life, you will live the best life you could ever live.
Who, or what, is providing inspiration for you in this life stage?
One person who is always providing inspiration to me, outside of the Lord and the Holy Spirit, is my father. My dad helps me with everything that I do. He inspires almost everything that I do, and he gives me vision for everything that I do. My dad has been the greatest visionary in my life to help me see what my life and ministry can be. I am very grateful for his wisdom, and I am grateful for everything that he imparts into me. I am grateful for his leadership and his help – I would not be doing what I am doing today without him.
What are you most expectant for in the remainder of 2021?
As I wrap up 2021 I just released a Christmas single – it’s a cover of the classic “This Christmas”! I will also be releasing a music video for that song this December. I think it’s hard to say that I am “expectant” for something at the end of the year – the reality is that I am just extremely grateful for what this year has been. As we are wrapping up the year and December is coming I look back from January until now to see what God has done in myself, in our team, and in my ministry to reach people through the music, the books, and the time I have gone out to travel and preach. Because of all that was accomplished this year, I am not just expectant for the rest of the year – I am grateful for what this year has been. I am expectant 2022, but I’m grateful for 2021 and all that God has done this year. I look forward to next year and all of the music we are going to continue to release, the books I am going to write, the sermons I’m going to preach, and the lives that are going to be impacted – I look forward to all that God is going to do next year!
