Inspired by the turbulence of the pandemic, social injustices and the collective grief felt around the world in the last year, Mixed Bag Entertainment artist Joshua Rogers recently released multiple versions of “Still Gon’ Trust,” a song that delivers a heartfelt message of strength and resilience and reminds us how important it is to trust in God. Rogers, from Greeleyville, South Carolina, was BET’s Sunday Best‘s first male and youngest winner. In this TCB Exclusive, Rogers shares about the journey of creating his latest single and what drew him to release different versions of it.

Congratulations on the recent release of “Still Gon’ Trust”! Why is the message of this track so important to you personally?
The message of this song is important personally to me because it’s a lesson that God has been drilling into me for some time now, and especially in 2020. I can admit that was one of my most challenging years ever. “Still Gon’ Trust” was a prayer and a vow I made to God and I’ve seen the power in these 3 words! In the world at large, we’re past fixing things on our own. Some people are really dealing with some serious issues that aren’t just so easily going away, but neither is God! He’s been here and he’s still here, waiting on us to turn to him and trust him completely.

You released the EP with multiple versions of the single. How did you go about selecting these and is there one you find that has greater accessibility?
When my label head, Gary Crockett, mentioned the idea I was a little unsure about it but it just began to unfold. He saw from the beginning the whole orchestra dynamic. When I originally recorded the song, it was with just the piano, then the rest of the team came up with the idea of “quarteting” the song or in my label head’s voice, “giving it a Deangelo feel” and the producer Lucius just took it and ran! It turned out amazing but I can’t say that I think one has more reach than the other, the whole idea was for each version of the song to reach different people. There’s a target audience out there for each version of this song. We truly wanted to reach everyone.

Take us back to filming the official video for “Still Gon’ Trust.” How did that day most surprise you, perhaps even exceeding your expectations?
For me there weren’t any surprises, the team knew what we wanted to accomplish and everyone just fell in line and did it! Now if anything is amazing, it’s that we did it in one day but that’s also not surprising given my experiences throughout my career. I’m just grateful to see how great and truly sincere the final outcome turned out.

How are you looking to define success for this single compared to some of your previous projects?
In a perfect world, I would love to see everyone in the world singing this song! The whole heart behind this song was to encourage and uplift people, reminding them that God still has the greatest power. And moreover, He still has his children on his mind! No matter what situations we all may face, keep trusting God despite what you see, feel and think!

Thinking back on your experience with BET’s Sunday Best, what has helped set you up for success that you maybe didn’t realize in the moment?
Being on ‘Sunday Best’ was a wonderful experience. However, it taught me some hard lessons. I quickly realized that this path wasn’t always going to be easy. My biggest lesson yet is ministry and the industry are not the same! And I’m still learning how to do both successfully while maintaining my focus on the reason why I started in the beginning. Through it all, I’m eternally grateful for my journey, God is faithful.

Who, or what, is currently providing inspiration for you, either musically or spiritually?
I’ve gained most of my inspiration musically from some of my recent experiences. I’ve been writing more lately and my journey has been without a doubt a strong influence on my music. I’m growing spiritually on this “LIFE’S JOURNEY”.

What are you most expectant for in the remainder of 2021?
Peace! As I continue to relinquish control to God and trust his plans and ways, I’m expecting a much more peaceful outlook on my life and overall mentality. And success on this song, not just for fame or popularity, but solely because I really believe in this song. And the power in this message for we all truly need to Trust God more now than ever before.
