Stemming off the success of his radio singles “Provider,” “Every Step of the Way” and the current single “Source of Life”, Red Street Records’ breakout artist Cade Thompson has announced the release of his first full-length album Bigger Story available starting September 10, 2021. Bigger Story will feature 10 tracks produced by longtime collaborators Matt Armstrong, Bryan Fowler, Micah Kuiper and AJ Pruis. Recorded in the heart of Music City, Thompson sat down with some of the industry’s top songwriters including award-winning artist Matthew West, as well as Krissy Nordhoff, Micah Kuiper, Ross King, Jeff Owen, Matt Armstrong, Jeff Pardo, Benji Cowart and Ethan Hulse to pen powerful and inspiring songs drawing inspiration from personal experiences about his experience with God. In this TCB Exclusive, Thompson shares the central question that inspired the album and what he hopes the collection reminds listeners of.
Can you talk about the meaning behind the title Bigger Story?
The song “Bigger Story” actually sums up the whole album ‘Bigger Story,’ which is why I chose that as the album title. This whole album started with the question if I could explain Jesus to someone who maybe has never heard of Jesus before, how would I explain Him? And it’s the message of that song, that we all are part of a bigger story, and Jesus is the only one who can save us, and the only hero in that story. As I look through the whole record, there is a beginning, middle, and ending to it. As you think of a story, it has that same feel, so that when you look back you can see God’s goodness in the past, as you look in the very present moment you can see God right here, and as you look ahead you can see God moving in ways that we could never imagine. So that’s the basis behind this whole album, and how the cover art turned out.
So you mention the song “Bigger Story” summarizes the full album. Did that song come first and lead you to the vision for the album?
That song was actually one of the last few songs I wrote for the album. And as we were trying to figure out what we were going to call this album, I just felt that ‘Bigger Story’ was it. I felt like, as my debut album, I’ve seen God in my story, and I want to spur people on to invite them to ask God into their stories. So I’m really excited this is going to be out there!
This is your debut album! Going into this project, what surprised you most about the process?
A lot of these songs were written quite a while ago – three years ago – when I was still an independent artist. I was just trying to write songs that God put on my heart. And the song “Provider,” which is on this album and my first radio single, was heard by Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts. He said he wanted a meeting with me, and there were a couple of other songs they heard that were completed at that time. So it’s really cool to see how God can work in those moments and the set-up for what it is today.
Which of the tracks, not yet heard in pre-releases, are you most excited for people to hear?
That’s a hard question – every song is really special on this record. And every day, a new song hits me in a different way, if I’m being honest. Lately, a song I’ve been enjoying is “Never Too Late.” It’s been a reminder for me, and hopefully will be for others, that it is never too late for grace, never too late for Jesus. A lot of people may feel that way – looking in the mirror, and wondering if God can still use me – and yes, He can. I’m excited about the message of that song reaching people!
How will you define success for this collection?
If one person, who doesn’t really walk with Jesus, hears this album and they decide to follow Jesus, then I consider that a success. There has already been story after story about how the songs that are already out have been reaching people, and I know that God is going to do so much more with it than I could ever imagine. It’s very exciting for me to be able to put out a project that is so close to my heart and has been speaking to me this past year. I’m super excited for people to cling onto this message as well.
This fall you will be hitting the road with Newsboys, Mandisa and We Are Messengers on the Step Into The Light Tour. After an extended period of quarantine, how does it feel to be back doing live music?
I’m so honored to be a part of that tour! I started touring as a sophomore in high school, and as I look back on those moments, God has been prepping me quite a while now for seasons like this. I’m ready to just be a part of that tour and get to share the stage with artists I’ve grown up listening to and been impacted by over the years.
Who, or what, are some of your current biggest inspirations, spiritually or musically?
Lately, a lot of inspiration has been from my community here in Nashville. I’m so fortunate to have some amazing people here that help me choose Jesus every single day and spur me on in different ways. I’ve seen growth in that, and I’m super grateful. People that hold me accountable and inspire me at the same time to write music and bring others to Jesus every day.
You’ve previously held a contest for a music video to accompany your music, and frequently put out lyric and music videos. Do you have plans in mind for the yet to be released tracks?
Yes! We are actually working on some video content as we speak. So, follow me on YouTube or check out my page, but we do have video content coming out alongside this record too, which is exciting!
What are you most expectant for in the remainder of 2021?
I’m expectant to see the continued impact that the music I’m making has on other people’s lives. I’m excited to see these songs, that have not seen the light of day, reach people. And I’m excited to see what their response is to this new music. And it’s not just this album this year, there will be more music to come too. Stay tuned!
