With northern grit and southern charm, Arbor North is the result of a divine appointment, decades in the making. Michael Boris and AC Jones’s story is one of being in the right place at exactly the right time, when following your heart and instinct can lead to something spectacular. The strength of their Christian faith has played a huge role in their relationship and continues to guide them as they navigate life as newlyweds and band-partners. The duo recently made their music debut with the single “All The Right Mistakes.” Co-written with esteemed Nashville songwriter, Bill DiLuigi, the lyrics explore the ways in which each one of life’s twists and turns, all of our choices and mistakes, are a part of a divine purpose. Additionally, Arbor North are delighted to be one of the first US acts announced for Millport Country Music Festival this summer and are excited to make their debut UK performance at the festival in August. In this TCB exclusive, the duo reflects on the autobiographical message behind their single, how the song previews their future releases and how they define their band’s mission.
Congratulations on the recent release of “All The Right Mistakes!” Why is the message of this track so important to you personally?
Thank you so much! We’re really excited that this track is finally out there! The message of this track is so important to the both of us personally because it provides an autobiographical glimpse into our story as a couple. There are so many things in our lives that, in the moment, made us ask the Lord, “Why?” but looking back grants this incredible perspective that, in those moments, the Lord was orchestrating something beautiful even though we couldn’t see it. It’s a testament to the fact that the Lord can turn the mistakes we’ve made and the paths that we’ve taken into something more wonderful than we could ever imagine.
Taking us back to the day you were writing the single, is there a moment that stands out to you looking back?
We think what stands out the most is just how perfect the title was. Our co-writer, Bill DiLuigi, walks into this write with us, and without knowing anything about our story or how we met, pitches this title that absolutely defines our own very personal perspectives of how the Lord worked in our lives. It certainly felt like divine intervention.
How are you looking to define success for this single?
For this single, and for every song that we plan on releasing, success to us is found in how listeners respond to it. As an artist, it’s so rewarding to hear stories from fans of how the song has positively influenced their lives.
With “All The Right Mistakes” being the debut single for your duo, how do you feel this track previews upcoming music from Arbor North?
Much like the introduction or prologue of a book, we feel that this single was a great way to introduce ourselves and give insight into where we came from and where we are going from a personal perspective. It’s a little more commercially standard than some of our upcoming tracks – musically and production-wise – but lyrically, it paints a picture of raw authenticity, which is consistent with the theme of our upcoming music.
You’ve shared that you define yourselves as Christians who are also musical artists. Can you explain why this distinction is important for you and how it impacts your band’s goals?
We’ve found that living out the word in our daily lives and building relationships are the two most important factors when it comes to sharing our faith. While we both love and have a background in CCM and worship music, there’s a limitation on its relatability to and acceptance by people who do not already hold the gospel as an important pillar in their lives. By writing songs that don’t always necessarily have a faith-based element (though many of our songs do) it creates connections between us and those who do not have a basis in faith. Our goal as a band is to focus on who we are as people and to let our testimony to others be in our actions and the way we live our daily lives.
Who, or what, is currently providing inspiration for you, either musically or spiritually?
Since we started dating, we have prayed together every night, and that prayer time together is a great source of inspiration for the two of us. Along with that, we have an incredible family that shares in our faith and encourages us in our spiritual growth.
What are you most expectant for in 2022?
We’re thrilled that we have been given the opportunity to perform at the Millport Country Music Festival in Millport, Scotland this August alongside incredible artists such as Drake White, Sunny Sweeney, and more! We’re so excited to finally get to share our live show soon and to step out on the stage again. Beyond that, we just can’t wait to see where the Lord will lead us in the future with Arbor North.
