Decyfer Down The Other Side Of Darkness Album Review
My Rating: 4.5 / 5

Decyfer Down’s latest collection is a story of this dark world and the light of His truth. It takes just one look at our broken and diseased world to be overwhelmed by the lies, deceit, and shadows. “Darkness is a valley,” says Chris Clonts, guitarist for Decyfer Down, “but there’s the light of God’s love on the other side.” No album can truly describe the struggle against the world without acknowledging the Light of the world; thus, this collection beautifully expresses both truths. With gritty guitar, explosive drums, and intense vocals, Decyfer Down’s The Other Side Of Darkness shows the struggles of this world and points to the refuge only Jesus Christ can offer.

“Dead Skin” describes one side of the darkness that plagues this world. After gradually building its intro, the chorus launches into an intense blend of drums contrasted by low-key, flowing guitar chords. Its words describe the battle against the flesh and its desires, only for the chorus to realize the need for shedding it all like a layer of dead skin. The melody maintains an atmosphere of desperation combined with slight shards of hope for rescue. This song excels in recognizing the destruction of the flesh and the need for a Savior.

Continuing from where “Dead Skin” left off, “Nothing More” presents itself from start to end as defiant and dauntless. The intro does not waste time as it erupts into an accelerated uproar of crashing drums and heavy guitar. With a righteous rage, the lyrics express a disgust with the broken promises of the enemy and say farewell to the days of lies. “It’s you I sever, be gone forever, I want nothing more” the chorus announces. The unbridled energy perfectly complements the themes behind the lyrics, making “Nothing More” an absolute highlight of the album.

Turning to the other half of the collection’s theme, “The Other Side Of Darkness” takes a different approach. In conveying both warning and encouragement, Decyfer Down slightly lowers the tempo and increases the potency of the instrumentals. Gritty guitar chords meld with massive drum beats and complement fierce vocals. The song’s lyrics detail Satan’s desire to destroy and break down, until the chorus looks beyond the Devil’s lies and to the light of God’s truth. With a massive, nearly unrivaled intensity, the title track beautifully shows Christ’s presence piercing every moment of darkness.

“Anchor Me” highlights His faithfulness, no matter how dark circumstances may be or how fiercely the storms may rage. Throughout the song, drums crash and electric guitar chords rage in a mix of chaotic, stormy instrumentals. The lyrics portray a man in desperation, where the waves of life crash down and threaten to carry him away. Before he can give in, the chorus erupts with “I feel You anchor me, when we drift apart … You saved me from myself … I feel Your strength from within when You anchor me.” “Anchor Me” serves to encourage and remind of His steadfast love, no matter how the storms around and about rage.

Expressing our pain, our struggle, His victory, and His faithfulness, The Other Side Of Darkness is intense, energetic, and moving. Each song excels in describing the darkness we face and the light of Jesus Christ that shines through the midst of it. In addition, the band’s instrumental mastery shows itself clearer than ever and complements the impactful lyrics. Once again, Decyfer Down has created a masterpiece of a collection.
