First, congratulations on your new single "Now"! Would you please explain the story behind the song?
Thank you so much! Three years in the making, and I feel so blessed that it’s getting a chance to be heard. My music has always reflected my life. Where I am in some relationship, or where I was in my career. I honestly thought that, and forgive me for going third person here, Mallary Hope the singer was all I was. it was my entire identity. I’ve been making music since I was 9-years-old and when I wasn't being successful, I started to question why God made me. Then, when I was pregnant with my first child, while listening to Christian radio,I just had this overwhelming feeling to make/say something more important. What’s the most important thing a Christian can do? It is to be Christ-like, love others, and tell people about God's love. This life is temporary but as a believer we have eternal life and it is our job to help win others over for the kingdom. So I figured, if God gave me this love of music in the first place, it was about time I used my gifts for His glory. For the first time in my life, I didn’t need someone to tell me “I love your voice” for me to feel validated. I found my validation in Christ. I just want to make music that can help people come to know what an amazing God He is. To experience His unconditional love and peace. For people to know that it is ok to surrender your will for the will of God. God will show you exactly what He has in store for you. You just have to allow Him to do so. "Now" was written because of my journey. It was the very first song we wrote for this album and came about after I shared all of that with my co-writer and producer Jeff Pardo. I had to get to a place where I was okay with whatever God’s plan for my life was, even if it wasn’t what I had in mind.
How would you say this single stands out in your discography?
I think it was obvious from the beginning that "Now" would be the first single. It just sounds so right. It’s my entire journey in three-and-a-half minutes and there's not a better song on that album that explains who and where I am. It was the first song we wrote and I think it’s a perfect introduction.
If there is one message you hope listeners take away after hearing "Now", what would it be?
My hope for "Now" is that people will be able to realize how Christ is with us every step of the way. Sometimes we get so focused on trying to do things our way that we forget to let Him be in control. I hope they are inspired to surrender their plans for His. He is so faithful, and right there, even when we unintentionally ignore Him. One of the most amazing things about our Father's love is that He promises us that He will never leave us. Something that really hit me was when I finally figured out that we can’t take any of this with us when we die. So why am I so worried about being successful at something that doesn’t matter? What is God going to say to me when He sees me? “Oh congrats on the awards and hit songs.” I don’t think so. I want him to say, “Well done. You see those people over there? You’ve never met them, but because you were faithful and followed My lead, you had a tiny part in planting a seed that brought them here.” So to me that was like my “ah-ha” moment. So I just hope peoples' hearts will be changed the way mine was.
How would you describe the sound of your music to brand new listeners?
I'm not exactly sure. [Laughs.] But, possibly singer-songwriter. I tell stories and I play guitar. It’s just what I do. Happy and from the heart.
You have recently been making the transition from a country artist to one in the Christian genre. What prompted you to make that change in direction?
When I became pregnant, I really felt this desire to sing songs about our Lord. I love country music don’t get me wrong, but something just changed in me. My songs have always been about where I am in my life and I wanted to sing something that I would feel comfortable having my daughter sing along to. My most important job as a Christian mom is to be an example to my kids so that when Jesus knocks on their heart, they will let Him in.
Recently, you walked the red carpet for and attended the 5th Annual K-LOVE Fan Awards. What was that experience like?
I love the K-LOVE Fan Awards. There's not another show like it. The red carpet is so much fun, and everyone is just so nice. It’s an amazing thing to just all be together and singing songs about our Lord.
Which artists are you currently drawing musical inspiration from?
I'm obsessed with Tauren Wells. His voice is just unreal. I love hearing him sing and just how effortlessly he makes it seem. I would love to sing some day with Natalie Grant and my buddy Danny Gokey. I wrote a song on my album with my friend Matthew West and I can’t wait for you guys to hear it. He’s just the best! We got to see Britt Nicole perform at the award show and I was blown away at how she can sing and dance like that. I'm not gonna lie, I’m probably the worst dancer ever so we never have to worry about me trying to sing and dance at the same time. If you ever watched the TV show Seinfeld, I'm basically like Elaine Benes hahaha.
